CHAMPOLLION. ON THE TRAILS OF HIEROGLYPHICS

For the 200th anniversary of the hieroglyph decipherment and the museum’s 10th anniversary, the Louvre-Lens is putting on an exceptional exhibition about the man who managed to solve the greatest puzzle in ancient Egyptian civilisation.

The exhibition covers the life of Jean-François Champollion and how he managed to understand symbols dating back to 3,200 BC, with the help of works written by his predecessors and backed by his remarkable study of the Rosetta Stone (discovered in 1799).

The exhibition also invites visitors to experience the context of the discovery and understand how it affected religion and society at the time.

With over 350 exhibits, the incredible quest to decipher the hieroglyphs is absolutely captivating!
